The Sleep (of Reason Produces Monsters, I Think), 2007/2037/2137 is a sound project that will not be completed until 2037. At that time the 100 year long audio track will be broadcast via satellite into outer space. The transmission will be a slowed down recording of an excerpt from Maurice Blanchot’s 1941 book, Thomas l’obscur. The excerpt includes the phrase, Je pense, donc je ne suis pas/I think therefore I am not.

2037 will mark the 400th anniversary of René Descartes’ Discourse on Method. This book includes the phrase, Je pense, donc je suis/I think, therefore I am and is understood to be the turning point in continental philosophy that led to subject-centered Modern thought. The transmission will conclude in 2137, the 500th anniversary of the Descartes book.

The duration of the originally recorded Blanchot excerpt is 2 minutes and 21 seconds. This will be extended to last for 100 years by multiplying each sound sample 22,320,000 times.

Pascale-Anne Brault recited the original on Thursday, May 10, 2007. Tom Miller was the recording engineer.

(blanc) a scent in abscentia

Conceived and created as an olfactory extension of themes from the artist’s oeuvre, (blanc) is extremely subtle and conceptually bold. Because fragrance is one of the most powerful media for stimulating the area of the brain that controls emotions, creativity, sexuality and memory, (blanc) is formulated, packaged, and marketed to generate meaningful interactive experience with a dab on the wrist or a touch behind the ear.

Calibrated to operate just beyond the human sense of smell, (blanc) is a must for all people strong enough to live in a realm of blank emptiness. Seemingly without presence, (blanc) delivers unflinching confidence and establishes the wearer as an individual of radical boldness.

Be bold, scent unlocks memory. Wear (blanc), absence unlocks amnesia.
